Taste Like Honey: Reminiscences from the Αlbum Εra

Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space

Gospels delivered by an ex-spaceman? Sure, why not, is there anything else one can embrace in outer space other than a superior, yet graceful, force?

Still, sometimes, the outer space can be located even within our bodies, as precious as we want them to be. Can you name another place where so many dead stars still insist on shining? Old loves, tattooed memories, psychedelic trips, words and rhythms, faces and touches, smells and old wounds, her kisses - all living inside us even long after they disappeared from sight.

Long story short, Jason Pierce sounds like a guy that felt all the feels.

As for me, I always felt that “Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space” is an album written by someone who found a God not for the chosen ones, nor the broken ones,

a God for the blissful ones.

Taste Like Honey: Reminiscences from the Αlbum Εra

Augustus Pablo / King Tubby - King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown

“Guys, I have an important announcement to make. Big news!”

He didn’t say a word and she made a question that I can’t recall precisely but it was of the nature “did you meet someone?” or “did you get a job?” Whatever.

I told them that I had a revelation that my future favorite music style would be dub/reggae and that I was brought to this conclusion as it was the first time music managed to uplift my soul. “It feels like participating in a spiritual ceremony sometimes” I said and she immediately got disenchanted. It’s not that she didn’t care, she simply couldn’t get it. She had zero tolerance for metaphysical quests and/or spiritual matters; she was voting for the extra-parliamentary Left.

All things considered, I realized at that time that the elevation of the soul through music was actually a real possibility.

Soon, Augusto Pablo’s melodica became a stairway climbing towards the sky penetrating fluffy clouds while King Tubby’s sound system managed to crack the invisible, and seemingly impenetrable, walls of fortress Babylon.
